Data were gathered in my small libary of about 150+ books on butterflies from all over the world, from a collection of scientific papers and from online resources.
To mention some very good sites:
Its really hard to determine the exact distribution of butterflies. The maps are a mixture of data from all resources mentioned above. They are handdrawn and may be incorrect in some details. I
am grateful for any correction.
A good point for a start is:
Where tropical butterflies fly, people often don't speak english. So there are often no true english names for tropical butterflies. The english names used here are adaptions to local common
names and names used in different books on tropical butterflies. But there may be more than one name for a species (e.g. Blue Moon in East Asia, but Eggfly to the west). Then I took the one I
like more. Sometimes I had to invent a new name for a species.
Latin or scientific names should exactly describe one and only one species (animal or plant). They consist of two parts. First the genus (just as any person has a family name) and follwing a species name (as the person's first name). The latin names are printed in italic.
